Reading Rep Theatre is committed to climate justice and reducing the impact our theatre has on the climate emergency. We pledge to work with and support our community and local government in tackling this emergency and we call on others to do the same.

Reading Rep is committed to building on past achievements to fully embed sustainable practices across its artistic programmes, operations and building infrastructure, to negate its impact on the environment.

Today we have made a declaration with Culture Declares to take decisive action to prevent further erosion of our planet’s natural resources and to minimise climate change. Climate Declares are a growing movement of people in arts and culture declaring a climate and ecological emergency and who believe arts and culture can lead in creating a regenerative future that protects the planet and sustains everyone, everywhere.

Ellie Gavin, General Manager and Lead on Sustainability for Reading Rep said “Since opening our new venue in 2021, we have made huge strides to reduce the impact our activity has on our immediate surroundings and the wider climate crisis. Some highlights include full LED lighting throughout the venue, operating a paperless ticket system and working with local, environmentally conscious suppliers in an effort to eradicate single use plastic on our bar. However; we know that the world as we know it will look very different if we don’t act now. So today, we are pledging our support; to see a better, more sustainable future for our hometown and beyond.”

As an organisation we aspire to be at the forefront of sustainable practice among organisations both in Reading and nationally. We aim to set trends for new and innovative ways of limiting our environmental impact in recognition of the climate emergency.

In order to achieve this we are determined to measure our impacts by accurately recording data to establish benchmarks for improvement, monitor and evaluate the learnings and outcomes and improve our practices and meaningfully reduce our environmental impact.
